Living with a Blue & Gold Macaw in Kalaburagi

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Blue & Gold Macaw room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners in the southern region tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Kalaburagi is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Blue & Gold Macaw needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from August to September, and September is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Blue & Gold Macaw bird, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
