Feeding a Persian: diet by life stage

What a Persian should eat changes across its life more than most owners expect. Portion size, not brand, is where most first-year problems start.

Planning for about 12 years

A Persian is with you for about 12 years. Budget and routine both need to survive that, including the last quarter of it when a medium cat needs more veterinary attention than it did young.

A breed from Home Backyard, living in India

The Persian was developed in Home Backyard. The part that travels badly is rarely temperament - it is the coat and the tolerance for heat. Plan the year around that and most of the rest follows.

Kitten to adult

Kittens need kitten food and several small meals a day. For an adult Persian, measured meals, weighed weekly.

Storage in an Indian climate

Humidity spoils dry food faster than the printed date suggests. Smaller quantities through the monsoon, sealed, and look at it before it goes in the bowl.

Changing food

Phase any change over a week. An abrupt switch upsets the gut and tells you nothing about whether the new food suits a medium cat.

Water matters more than owners think

Many cats drink too little, which shows up years later as kidney trouble. Water away from the food, refreshed daily, in a wide bowl. Never cow's milk.

Balancing friendly against naughty

Breeds described as both friendly and naughty need the two managed together rather than separately. With a medium cat that usually means a predictable routine first and training second - the routine is what makes the training stick.
